"Gordo" is the affectionate nickname winemaker Patrick Mata called his father, Jose. This label honors the Mata family's winemaking legacy spanning four generations in central / southern Spain. Today, Patrick makes the wine at the cooperative winery Compania de Vinos del Atlantico, CVA, and is packaged with a label styled after the family's bottles in the 1800s. The wine celebrates the undervalued Monastrell grape (called Mourvedre in France and Mataro in Italy), and comes from higher elevation limestone soils offering deep red fruits with a silky mineral texture.
